Popular versions often present cosmic opening and bodily transformation as one continuous episode. The surviving textual trail shows different sources, emphases and levels of detail for the two clusters.

Quotations associated with Sanwu Liji focus on chaos, Pangu, clear and murky forces, daily growth and cosmic distance. Later material, including passages transmitted under Shuyi Ji, expands the transformation of eyes, limbs, blood, breath and hair into parts of the natural world.
