The Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors

Humanity now possesses fire, dwelling and clothing. The story turns to harder questions: where knowledge begins, who establishes order and why rule is legitimate.

This narrative follows Fuxi, Shennong and the Yellow Emperor as the Three Sovereigns, then Shaohao, Zhuanxu, Ku, Yao and Shun as the Five Emperors. Their traditions connect observation, farming, medicine, warfare, ancestry, calendars and political ideals.

Ancient works do not preserve one universal roster. Shiji and other sources arrange the figures differently, so each sequence must be read with its own textual history.

These figures cannot all be identified as single verifiable historical people, yet together they preserve ways of imagining civilization, ancestry and ideal government.
